A New Social Media Paradigm

We just have to say that a business model that’s premised upon discovering the weaknesses in your attention in order to hack it and sell it to the highest bidder is fundamentally immoral and we will not allow it.

Will We Ever Reach Financial Herd Immunity?

Speculative money is spreading the virus of capitalism. The financial pandemic is out of control — because there are no borders or governors or effective laws to stop the money-begets-money-begets-money algorithm. The speculative traders are like superspreaders, and the whole world is vulnerable.

A Word to Help Us Survive the Next Ten Years

As she was in a hospital bed dying of cancer, my mother got a message from a friend with the words, “remember sisu.” It’s one of those untranslatable exotic Scandinavian words that marketeers misuse so they can sell us multivitamins. Crudely speaking, sisu is a Finnish concept for reckless bravery in the face of unimaginable odds.

Lone Wolf Activism — Live Without Dead Time

The only thing that gives me satisfaction lately is going out and getting my nose dirty. When my mother, white with rage, complains to my family, she is told off. In Kerala there is a saying: whether the leaf encroaches on the thorn or the thorn encroaches on the leaf, it's the leaf that tears. In other words, it is not their job to protect the girl; it is the mothers' responsibility to protect her daughter.I am eleven. I hear what's said about me: Too bossy. Talks too much. Doesn't have enough girlfriends. Doesn't help out in the kitchen. At a family vacation, a man six times my age puts his disgusting mouth on mine without my consent. My aunts and uncles are in the room just next door. Many years later, recounting this story to my mother, I realize the violence I experienced was a mere slight compared to what she and her mother
